Are Turtle’s the Coolest Underwater Creatures?
See the coolest underwater creatures, our Green & Hawksbill Sea Turtle’s whilst scuba diving in Phuket.
Loving Turtles
Recently whist scuba diving in Phuket we have had many opportunities to dive with turtles. Each Time I have seen turtles they have the appearance of being the coolest creatures under the water. No matter how many scuba divers are around they never seem to get ruffled. They casually put on a show for scuba divers of all levels.
Turtles can be a scuba diving instructors dream as the are reliably remain in the same territory. They remain mostly in shallow depths which make them easily accessible the those learning to scuba dive such as the PADI Discover Scuba Divers and PADI Open Water students.
Hawksbill Turtle
The Hawksbill turtle is often found at Phi Phi in the shallow waters of Malong Wall. They can also be found at a dive site called Turtle Rock on Phi Phi Ley. Yesterday we were scuba diving with for PADI Open Water students. We were lucky enough to see three turtles during the dive. Our maximum depth for the dive was 9.4 metres. Which of course places it well within the limitations of PADI’s two beginners courses the PADI Discover Scuba Diving and PADI Open Water course.
However it not only those learning to scuba dive that love turtles. Even the most experienced scuba divers love them. Their slow gentle natures make they easy to watch and easy to photograph. I have seen many pictures of turtles taken by day trip customers and students alike.
Whenever we place pictures on social media outlets such as Facebook they always get a great response from all walks of life.
Most Common Found
In Phuket and Phi Phi the most common turtle to see is the Hawksbill turtle. They are named after their distinct beak like mouth. They are commonly found in shallow coral reefs and can live to between 30 and 50 years. It appears that their favorite food is the commonly found sea sponges. When born the way around 24 grams and are about 2.5 centimetres long. They grow to a length of one metre and their average weight is arount 80 kilograms however they can get as big as 127 kilograms.
Although theses turtles are most likely been found at Phi Phi. They have also been commonly found at Shark Point, Anemone Reef and Racha Yai Island.
To the north of Phuket In the popular liveaboard destination of the Similan Islands another breed of turtle is commonly found. Island number one in the Similan Islands is a turtle nesting sanctuary so turtles make regular appearances.
Green Turtle
You are more likely to find the bigger Green Turtle whist on a liveaboard adventure in the Similan Islands. These turtles can grow to 1.5 metres long and have been recorded up to 300 kilograms. Phuket has a few turtle breeding programs which will help conserve both species located here in Phuket.
Phuket Aquarium has a fantastic facility that both scuba divers and non divers alike can enjoy these very cool creatures.
I cannot urge any scuba divers visiting Phuket or anyone wishing to learn to scuba diving to come and witness these beautiful creatures first hand.
