What to Expect During Your PADI Discover Scuba Diving
Your PADI Discover Scuba Diving day will typically start with a 7:30 am pick up from your hotel where you will be transported to the Chalong Pier where all the scuba diving and snorkeling boats depart from. This is about 20 minutes drive from Patong Beach.
You will be met by your PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor taken to the boat and given a tour of the boat’s facilities. Your Instructor will brief on your days event with information including the dive site where you will dive, what you are likely to see under the water, the do’s and don’ts and also given the compulsory PADI Discover Scuba Diving information presentation. Your PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor will be happy to answer any questions you may wish to ask about PADI Discover Scuba Diving experience.
All the scuba diving boats here in Phuket are large purpose built boats and can hold between 30 and 60 people. During the high season they are generally full however during the low season they can run with as few as 10 people on board.
Nearly all of the boats have their own cooks onboard serving freshly cooked breakfasts and lunch. All the boats have free tea, coffee and water facilities, free snacks and fruit and some even have freshly cooked pancakes for the trip home. One thing for sure is you will never go hungry on a Phuket scuba diving boat. Usually they have soft drinks and beer for the trip home, there is a small charge for these so remember to bring some money along.
When you arrive at the dive site your instructor will help you get into your scuba diving equipment. They will assist you to the back of the boat where you will enter the water. Your BCD (Buoyancy Control Device) will be fully inflated so you may momentarily go under the water however you will almost instantly come to the surface and float. Your BCD also acts as a floatation device.
The first thing you will do is practice four basic skills that will assist you when you are under the water. They include what to do in the unlikely event the regulator (breathing apparatus) comes out of your mouth and what to do if you get water in your mask.
These skills should be done in very shallow water. Sometimes they are done on a buoy line, other times they are completed in water shallow enough to stand up in.
Free Pool Session
Aussie Divers Phuket has a special offer in relation to these skills. They can be done in our swimming pool the day before your PADI Discover Scuba Diving free of charge. This will make for an easier, safer and more enjoyable Discover Scuba Diving experience and gives you much better value for money.
Once you have completed the skills you will then be free to enter the amazing world of scuba diving. Your instructor will guide you around some of the most beautiful underwater sites in the world and you will get to see creatures in the natural habitat like you have never seen before.
These dives typically last between 35 and 50 minutes and you will get the opportunity to do either two or three during your PADI Discover Scuba Diving experience.
Lunch is generally served between the first and second dive on a two dive day and between the second and third dive on a three dive day.
On most occasions you will have a one hour break known as a surface interval between your scuba dives.
On the second scuba dive you will not have to practice the skills again so you will be able to enter the water and away you go. Again your PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor will be right by your side. Hopefully you will have more confidence and it will be an easier scuba dive.
Another break and another dive, this time you should be feeling very comfortable and you will see how easy scuba diving is.
