Scuba Diving Uses for a Face Mask Post COVID-19
Be Earth Friendy – Reuse Those Face Masks
The surgical face mask has been around for a long time. Until COVID-19 many of us had never worn one. Now the face mask has become a standard part of daily life for most of us.
However, once COVID -19 is done and dusted, what will we do with all the left over face masks?
Well hold on to those used face masks as we have come up with 9 exciting new scuba diving uses for the humble surgical face mask post COVID -19.
Please note that NONE of these uses have been approved or sanctioned by PADI and it is highly unlikely they will be in the future.
WARNING: All models in the photos below are highly trained in the alternate scuba diving use of used surgical face masks. Please do not try this at home and if you have concerns please contact a professional dive centre near you.
Here are our top 9 in no particular order.
1. Spare Mask Strap
Mask straps have a habit of braking at the most inconvenient times. Now you will have a cheap and convenient and inexpensive replacement.
Between dives you can quickly disconnect it and bam, you are back to being virus protected just as you were during those quarantine days of COVID-19.
2. Sun protection for the follicle challenged
Sunburn can ruin any scuba diving day. Now that old face mask can come in handy as a bit of extra sun protection, especially if you are not so blessed on top.
With a SP Factor rating of 0, that old face mask will have you stand out from the crowd on any good dive boat.
Please note that this is not a replacement for normal sun care. Always use a professional reef safe sun care product in conjunction with your face mask. Don’t forget, slip, slop, slap.
3. 100th Dive modesty
Let’s face it, the 100th dive is not something all divers feel comfortable in doing. It is also not something that a lot of dive buddies particularly like witnessing either.
Now your old face mask can be handy for a bit of 100th dive modesty. It is soft and comfortable and has no sharp edges and should fit snuggly for the most fastidious diver.
Further it assists with any dangling and keeps a nice trim. There is no one would like the “beans and frank” accidentally rubbing against a bit of fire coral.
Tuck it in and keep it safe on that 100th dive.
4. Alternate Second Stage holder
For too long we have paid too much for novelty second stage holders. After COVID – 19 we will all be a little short of cash.
That recycled face mask will make the perfect Octopus holder and you will get to save a few bucks in the process.
Further, the face masks are brightly colored (medical blue) and should be easy to locate in most underwater emergencies.
5. Hair Tidy
Being beautiful and managing long hair during a dive has always been a scuba diving challenge.
Now there is a cheap and effective solution to keeping that hair tidy and in place where it should be.
Coming in a range of popular COVID -19 colours (medical blue and darker medical blue) I am sure that that old face mask will be the perfect scuba diving fashion accessory and keep those whispy annoying get away hair in place during a dive.
6. Dive Computer case
You have paid a lot of money for that dive computer. Sadly, most computer manufacturers have been quite stingy when it comes to protection for your expensive piece of scuba diving technology.
Your loved dive computer will now fit snuggly into that used face mask, protecting it from bumps and scratches and keeping it in pristine condition for years to come.
7. Heel strap protector
No one like blisters whilst diving. They can make a dive uncomfortable and can distract you from some amazing underwater creatures.
Now in a few short seconds, you can convert that old face mask into a blister free dive and you will be the envy of all the others on the boat.
8. Camera Dome Protector
Let’s face it, the prices Canon, Olympus and have been getting away with overcharging us for neoprene protectors for our expensive underwater dome.
Now, for a fraction of the cost, that used face mask will sit snuggly over that delicate and expensive lens.
9. Post Dive Beer Cooler
Yes, it is cool to collect beer coolers from your favorite dive centres around the world.
Let’s face it though, international travel is going to be a bit slow for a few years to come and that beer cooler collection will start to wither away.
No need to panic, that old face mask is a perfect replacement for that sturdy custom fit cooler.
That old face mask can be molded into any beer container. It does not matter if it is a bottle or a can, your face mask will do the job. Cheers.
