Lara Weyhausen - EnglishLara Weyhausen - English

Lara is from Niedersachsen in the north west of Germany.

Her first scuba diving experience was on the small island of Koh Phangan, Thailand when she was just 12 years old. She did a PADI Discover Scuba Diving with her mother and sister and was fortunate enough to see a whale shark. Something she loves reminding her boss about as he has never seen one.

Lara didn’t dive again for another nine years. She did her PADI Open Water Course in Cairns, Australia and fell in love with diving. Less than two years later she was doing her PADI Instructor Development Course in Phuket.

She chose Phuket to do her pro training as it was an easy travel destination from New Zealand with direct flights. The warm weather and easy going and inexpensive life style appealed to her as well.

After becoming aa PADI Instructor she worked a season in the Similan island on one of the many liveaboards that travel up there. She adored the diving and the relaxed lifestyle on the boats. It was a great way to learn the trade and a lot of fun being out at sea full time. She believes it was a great induction into the world of a full-time scuba diving professional.

Working with Aussie Divers Phuket

At the end of the season she decided that what she really wanted was the teach others to scuba dive. She settled in Phuket and went job hunting. At the top of her list was working for a PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Centre as that would be the best place to help her reach here ultimate goal of PADI Course Director.

As luck would have it, Aussie Divers Phuket were looking for a German speaking instructor. They offered her work straight away on the one condition that she lost a horrible New Zealand accent she had picked after working in New Zealand for 12 months. He boss stated that the New Zealand accent was easier to catch than COVID-19 and if she didn’t lose it she would have to go into quarantine until she did.

Lara has been now working full time at Aussie Divers Phuket for over two hears now and says that the time has just flown by. She considers the staff she works with as friends instead of just colleagues. It is like having one big family from a whole lot of different places from around the world.

Favorite Dive Site

Lara’s favourite dive site is the King Cruiser Wreck. It is challenging and mostly has low visibility. It is not for beginners but you have such a great variety of marine life. She states that a lot of the time you see more fish then you see the wreck itself.

Favorite Fish

Lara’s favorite fish is a Sea Moth however what really gets her very excited is finding different kind of Nudibranchs.

Her favorite PADI course is the PADI Open Water Course. It is amazing to introduce new divers to the magical underwater world.

What she likes the most about teaching scuba diving is the people you meet. She has meet and made new friends from all around the world and she simply believes that the best dive is any dive with a great buddy.

She is a PADI Specialty Instructor for the following specialties: Oxygen Provider, Enriched Air Nitrox, Deep Diving, EFR Instructor.

Do I Need to Know How To Swim to Scuba Dive?

This is a question that I often get asked, and really it is not as simple as YES or NO. Here is some explanations and reasons why. If you want to become a certified scuba diver by doing the PADI Open Water Diver Course, the answer is yes. In the PADI Open Water Diver Course it is specified that you have to be able to swim continuously for 200 metres. This can be with any stroke however it does need to be continuous without stopping. There is alternate option and that is you do a 300 metre mask, fin and snorkel swim. Some do find this easier to the 200 swim. You also have to be able to tread water or float for at least 10 minut [...]

Is Scuba Diving Deep Better?

I am often a little miffed when I receive emails asking about depths of dives and the thought of seeing more when deeper. Is going deep when scuba diving always better? It is one of scuba diving’s greatest myths that when going deeper you will see more creatures. Coral reefs require clear water and sunlight to flourish and most of the best coral is found closer to the surface. The healthier the coral reef is the more marine life will be present. Many fish graze off corals and the coral becomes their major food source. More coral should equal more fish. The closer you are to the surface the more light there is making it easier [...]
