What is the water temperature for scuba diving in Phuket Thailand
We often get asked what will be the water temperature when scuba diving in Phuket of Thailand. Phuket is fortunate that our water temperature is very stable and does not fluctuate much and has some of the warmest waters in the world.
Generally the water temperature in and around Phuket is normally a very comfortable 29 degrees Celsius. With a long run of overcast days it may drop to a chilly 28 degrees and if we get an extended run of warm sunny weather it could reach 30 degrees Celsius.
Occasionally we have thermoclines come through that will reduce the temperature to 27 – 28 degrees however they are rare.
If you are doing a scuba diving liveaboard adventure in Similan Islands then the water temperature may drop a degree or two.
In 2019 the Indian Ocean Dipole (the Indian Ocean’s equivalent of El Nino) had water temperatures down to an amazingly low 24 Degrees at times.
Our rental wetsuits are 3mm shorties however a lot of divers choose not to wear a wetsuit at all. Shorts and a rash guard are a common sight. Divers often comment on the freedom of being able to dive without a wetsuit. If you feel the cold whilst diving then generally a 3mm long wetsuit is more than enough.
When diving a liveaboard in the Similan Islands and doing multiple dives over consecutive days then 3mm long wetsuit is is often a good idea. Although there are still plenty of divers that wear only shorts and a rash guard,
The warm water temperature make it a great place to learn to dive.
Come to Phuket and try scuba diving in our lovely warm waters.
