PADI Motto: Go Places, Meet People, Do Things
Anyone that has completed his or her PADI Open Water or PADI Scuba Diver Course and would have heard that motto. All right, it sounded corny and in fact it’s over use probably is however PADI got it spot on. Learning to scuba dive does in fact open up a whole world of places to go, lets you meet a vast range of different people and do many different things you wouldn’t have normally done.

Go Places:
I saw a t-shirt design the other month that had written on it “ The earth is 70% water, if you don’t scuba dive …enjoy your 30%.
By becoming a PADI certified dives it opens up 70% of to world to you. PADI has over 6000 dive centres in 170 different countries of the world. You could learn to scuba dive in any of those 170 countries.
I have friends that are PADI Scuba Diving Instructors in many different countries in the world including Kuwait, Spain, Indonesia, Egypt, Singapore, Palau, Australia, Madagascar and Sweden.
There was an article on Facebook the other day where a diver was preparing to scuba dive in his 100th different country. Now that is a fair effort.
Meet People:
I still am able to recall the first day I entered a scuba diving shop with the thought of going for a dive. I was met by an Australian lady called Pip. At the time I was in Phuket for a few weeks and was trying fill in some time. I was looking at doing a PADI Discover Scuba Diving however she talked me into doing my PADI Open Water Course. To this day I still keep in touch with her as do I with my French PADI Open Water Instructor Jean Brice who I now still consider a legend for teaching me how to scuba dive and I still se him regularly here in Phuket.
Since that day I have literally meet 1000’s of people from many walks of life of many different nationalities. The number of students I have had just from the basic PADI Discover Scuba Diving and PADI Open Water courses is in excess of 500.
Most of my closest friends I have now are all from the scuba diving world.
Many of those students are on Facebook and the number of students and friends met through scuba diving would be in excess of 300.
Do Things:
The world of scuba diving is not just about going under water and looking at fish, although Project Aware do say that there are 21,000 different types of fish underneath the sea.
But there are different wrecks to see also and not only ship wrecks but airplanes as well. There are underwater caves to explore as well as underwater cities.
There is recreational scuba diving which reaches depths of up to 40 metres and there is a wide range of technical scuba diving that can take you to 100 metres.
There are a wide range of jobs that you can do underwater such as marine biology research, underwater construction, search and recovery operations, working on liveaboard boat and ocean liners just to name a few.
When I started my PADI Open Water course I had no idea that in the future I would own a shop in Thailand. This is a whole world away from the remote desert town of Mildura in Australia where I grew up.
PADI has allowed me to Go Places, Meet People and Do Things.
