Good Dive Deck Preparation

Good Dive Deck Preparation

Good Dive Deck Preparation

Here is a blog to assist with good dive deck preparation and hopefully make you dive day a little easier.

Getting a Safer Start to Your Scuba Diving Day

The day trip scuba diving boats in Phuket are large often wooden boats. These boats can hold up to 50 scuba divers. The dive decks at the back of the boat are often crowded and leave little room for scuba diver preparation. More importantly enough space for instructors tutoring students. If dive deck is not planned in an efficient manner it can become unnecessarily crowded. Not allowing scuba divers to properly prepare. In a worse case scenario be dangerous and lead to accidents both on the dive deck and upon entry to the water.

A clustered dive deck can be unsettling for students learning to scuba dive such as those doing beginners courses. Courses such as the PADI Discover Scuba Diving and PADI Open Water course. Good preparation space is important for those learning to scuba dive as it keeps the student calm and relaxed. This makes for a safe entry into the water. The way a learner diver experiences their first dive could mean the difference between having a long and enjoyable scuba diving life or giving it up after one day.

Dive Courses

All those doing the lower level PADI courses such as the PADI Open Water Course and PADI Advanced Open Water course should be doing well orchestrated buddy checks. This should be done with plenty of room to successfully complete the checks with their instructor. Being relaxed is vital in their preparation.

The dive deck plan should be that the most experienced scuba divers enter the water first. Experienced scuba divers should get prepared faster and have a better understanding of entry techniques and have a less fear of water itself.

First Group

This first group would also include experienced fun divers or those completing more experienced courses such Divemaster course or maybe even technical divers. It would also include those that have to enter the deeper water first which could be those doing PADI Deep Diver Specialty or students completing the Deep Adventure dive of the PADI Advanced Open Water course.

As scuba diving boats normally do here in Phuket they move from the deeper water to the shallow dive area. If the dive deck plan has been done correctly the dive boat has been cleared of the experienced divers. This leaves plenty of space for the more meek of scuba divers being the PADI Open Water Course students and PADI Discover Scuba Diving participants. The PADI Instructor who is in charge of these students should be in close proximity and preferable making eye contact with their students at all times.

Do I Need to Know How To Swim to Scuba Dive?

This is a question that I often get asked, and really it is not as simple as YES or NO. Here is some explanations and reasons why. If you want to become a certified scuba diver by doing the PADI Open Water Diver Course, the answer is yes. In the PADI Open Water Diver Course it is specified that you have to be able to swim continuously for 200 metres. This can be with any stroke however it does need to be continuous without stopping. There is alternate option and that is you do a 300 metre mask, fin and snorkel swim. Some do find this easier to the 200 swim. You also have to be able to tread water or float for at least 10 minut [...]
