How Snorkelling With Manta Rays Inspired a Couple to Learn Scuba Diving
Sometimes all it takes is one unforgettable moment in the ocean to completely change the way you see the underwater world.
That’s exactly what happened to Jasmine and Andre.
During their recent PADI Advanced Open Water course with Aussie Divers Phuket in Phuket, they shared the story of how a manta ray encounter in the Maldives inspired them to become scuba divers.
And it all started with one simple sentence:
“I want to be one of those guys…”
Escaping Winter for the Maldives
Like many travellers from Europe, Jasmine and Andre booked a tropical escape to the Maldives to swap cold weather for sunshine, warm water, and a few relaxing cocktails by the pool.
After a few lazy days soaking up the sun, they decided it was time to explore more of what the resort had to offer. One activity immediately caught their attention, a manta ray snorkelling trip.
Neither of them knew much about manta rays before the excursion, but the idea of seeing these giant creatures in the wild sounded too good to pass up.

Snorkelling With Manta Rays
The boat departed shortly after breakfast and headed toward one of the Maldives’ famous manta ray cleaning stations.
As soon as they entered the water, Jasmine and Andre spotted their first manta ray gliding effortlessly beneath them in the crystal-clear blue water. Andre quickly grabbed his GoPro while both of them floated above in complete amazement.
Then they noticed something else.
Streams of bubbles rising from below.
A group of scuba divers sat quietly underwater while the manta rays cruised just meters away from them. From the surface, it looked like the divers were completely immersed in the experience.
Closer. Calmer. Part of the ocean.
Andre watched for a few moments before turning to Jasmine and saying:
“Hey… I want to be one of those guys.”
Not long after, he added:
“I want to be closer to the manta rays.”
That single moment changed everything.
Learning to Scuba Dive
After returning to the resort, Jasmine and Andre went straight to the dive centre to ask about learning to scuba dive.
The team introduced them to the PADI Open Water Diver course, the world’s most recognised beginner scuba certification.
Within hours, they had signed up.
Their instructor, Jamie, guided them through the next three days as they completed their theory, confined water training, and first ocean dives.
Back in their room that night, they flew through the PADI eLearning program, excited for what was ahead.
The following day, they entered the shallow lagoon near the resort and practised essential scuba skills before heading out for their open water dives.
Over the next two days, they explored multiple dive sites and encountered turtles, reef sharks, octopuses, schools of barracuda, and vibrant coral reefs.
But there was still one thing they really wanted to experience again.
The manta rays.

Becoming “One of Those Guys”
On the final day of their holiday, Jasmine and Andre booked a scuba dive back at the manta ray site.
This time, they weren’t floating on the surface watching from above.
They were underwater.
Face to face with giant manta rays as they soared effortlessly through the ocean around them.
The experience stayed with them long after the dive ended, and according to both of them, it became one of the defining moments of their lives.
Most importantly, they finally became “one of those guys.”
