Somboon 3 liveaboard in the Similan Islands

Somboon 3 is a nice budget liveaboard vessel sailing through the Similan and Surin Islands.

The Boat

The MV Somboon 3 and her sister ship MV Somboon 4 are unique amongst Phuket liveaboards. They have no fixed schedule, allowing you the flexibility to hop on and off at your convenience making them the easiest boats to plan your liveaboard adventure around.

They are both very large vessels with plenty of space. During the busy season they can be feel a little crowded on the middle 2 dives of the day when the day trip divers arrive but you can smile and wave them on there way at around 3:30pm. The dive deck is huge and the outside shaded area comfortably seats the maximum of 28 guests and there’s always space on the generous sun deck. MV Somboon 3 has 3D/2N trips heading to the Similan Islands, Koh Bon, Richelieu Rock and Koh Tachai every Wednesdays and Sundays giving you one of the best chances of seeing some big creatures at these fantastic dive sites.

To dive Similan Islands, Koh Bon, Koh Tachai and Richelieu Rock in a 3 day 2 night trip you will need to depart on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday.

Do I Need to Know How To Swim to Scuba Dive?

This is a question that I often get asked, and really it is not as simple as YES or NO. If you want to become a certified scuba diver by doing the PADI Open Water Diver Course, the answer is yes. In the PADI Open Water Diver Course it is specified that you have to be able to swim 200 metres. This can be with any stroke. You also have to be able to tread water or float for at least 10 minutes. The reason for this is not for the fact that scuba diving requires you to swim. But rather it is for your and your groups safety. In the unlikely event that your BCD (Buoyancy Control Device) was to falter then there would be no device to kee [...]

Where is the best scuba diving in Phuket?

Phuket is a popular tourist destination in Thailand, known for its stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters. It's also a haven for scuba divers, offering some of the best diving spots in the world. The warm and clear waters around Phuket are home to a diverse range of marine life, including sea turtles, barracudas, and colorful corals. One of the most popular diving spots in Phuket is the Similan Islands, which are located about 100 kilometers northwest of Phuket. Best done as liveaboard trips the islands boast some of the most impressive underwater landscapes in the region, with granite boulders forming caves, swim-throughs, and [...]

My First Scuba Dive

Around fifteen years ago, I embarked on what would become a life-changing experience: my first scuba dive. As a PADI Discover Scuba Diving Experience participant in Phuket, Thailand, I was both nervous and excited to explore the underwater world. Little did I know that this would be the start of my scuba diving journey, which eventually led me to become a PADI scuba diving instructor. Before my first dive, I underwent a brief training session with my PADI instructor. We went over the basic principles of scuba diving, such as equalizing pressure in my ears and mask clearing techniques. Even though it was just a quick session, it was eno [...]
