Somboon 3 liveaboard in the Similan Islands

Somboon 3 is a nice budget liveaboard vessel sailing through the Similan and Surin Islands.

The Boat

The MV Somboon 3 and her sister ship MV Somboon 4 are unique amongst Phuket liveaboards. They have no fixed schedule, allowing you the flexibility to hop on and off at your convenience making them the easiest boats to plan your liveaboard adventure around.

They are both very large vessels with plenty of space. During the busy season they can be feel a little crowded on the middle 2 dives of the day when the day trip divers arrive but you can smile and wave them on there way at around 3:30pm. The dive deck is huge and the outside shaded area comfortably seats the maximum of 28 guests and there’s always space on the generous sun deck. MV Somboon 3 has 3D/2N trips heading to the Similan Islands, Koh Bon, Richelieu Rock and Koh Tachai every Wednesdays and Sundays giving you one of the best chances of seeing some big creatures at these fantastic dive sites.

To dive Similan Islands, Koh Bon, Koh Tachai and Richelieu Rock in a 3 day 2 night trip you will need to depart on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday.

Do I Need to Know How To Swim to Scuba Dive?

This is a question that I often get asked, and really it is not as simple as YES or NO. If you want to become a certified scuba diver by doing the PADI Open Water Diver Course, the answer is yes. In the PADI Open Water Diver Course it is specified that you have to be able to swim 200 metres. This can be with any stroke. You also have to be able to tread water or float for at least 10 minutes. The reason for this is not for the fact that scuba diving requires you to swim. But rather it is for your and your groups safety. In the unlikely event that your BCD (Buoyancy Control Device) was to falter then there would be no device to kee [...]

Has COVID Restrictions Improved Diving in Thailand

There is no doubt that COVID has taken a lot from the tourism in Thailand, especially the scuba diving sector. However, with the lack of tourists (and divers) there is a reduction in the negative impacts on the environment. With less boat traffic, divers, snorkelers, coral damaging sunscreen and less fishing vessels due to the lack of demand of seafood the strain has been greatly reduced. It appears that the COVID restrictions has improved diving in Thailand. Although the lack of divers and tourists has not pleased business owners and those employed in the tourism industry, it appears to be having a positive impact on mother nature. [...]

What Drives Me

During 2020 I repetitively heard comments to stay positive during these COVID times. These were always done with the best of intentions of the speaker. Often doing their best to keep everyone upbeat during some pretty tough times. As there was no international tourism, the scuba diving industry in Thailand was hit hard. The inner me always found these comments a little frustrating and I didn’t know why. During COVID I had been working hard against the norm, making changes to my business and expanding the company. There have been some good results for us. Oddly though, I don’t think I was positive during this period, it actually felt [...]
