The Smiling Seahorse

The Smiling Seahorse Liveaboard

The MV Smiling Seahorse took set sail for the first time in November 2018. She was a purposely build liveaboard vessel. Her steel hull is well suited to waters of the Andaman Sea and her two 2 superior engines allow the MV Smiling Seahorse to venture further into into the waters of Myanmar. Although the boat is larger than its predecessor, measuring 25m long and 6.4m wide, her eight cabins and bathrooms spread over four levels cater for up to 16 guests. She is a spacious boat that keeps regular liveaboard divers happy.

Our boat has very spacious common areas on 3 levels and is also the first liveaboard in Thailand designed with photographers in mind:

having a dedicated “photographers’ room”, camera rinsing tanks, charging stations, editing stations and well-trained boat staff experienced in handling all kind of expensive gear.

The Cabins

8 double cabins all but the standard have their own toilet, shower and sink which provides guests privacy beyond most boats at this price in the area and all cabins have individual air conditioners.

  • 2 Master Cabins. Main Deck, Double Bed, Private Bathroom
  • 2 Deluxe Cabins. Main Deck, Double/Twin/Twin Bed, Private Bathroom
  • 2 Standard Cabins. Upper Deck, Double Bed, Shared Bathroom

The Food

Very good. All meals are served buffet style on the shaded upper deck. Really tasty traditional Thai food with the occasional Western style meal. There’s never a problem if you have any special dietary requests just please give us some advance warning.

Do I Need to Know How To Swim to Scuba Dive?

This is a question that I often get asked, and really it is not as simple as YES or NO. If you want to become a certified scuba diver by doing the PADI Open Water Diver Course, the answer is yes. In the PADI Open Water Diver Course it is specified that you have to be able to swim 200 metres. This can be with any stroke. You also have to be able to tread water or float for at least 10 minutes. The reason for this is not for the fact that scuba diving requires you to swim. But rather it is for your and your groups safety. In the unlikely event that your BCD (Buoyancy Control Device) was to falter then there would be no device to kee [...]

Scuba Diving Phuket – Recovery After the Pandemic

The Phuket scuba diving industry took a pretty big hit during the COVID pandemic. Phuket was isolated from the outside world for almost 18 months. During the period there were times when there was no scuba diving in Phuket at all. Even our local beach dives at Kata Beach were banned for an amount of time. The Phuket scuba diving industry is heavily reliant on international visitors and some businesses are almost 99% dependent on international divers. It was a very tough time for scuba diving in Phuket. A lot of scuba diving instructors returned to their native countries and employment within the scuba diving was slashed. The pand [...]
