Do I Need to Know How To Swim to Scuba Dive?

This is a question that I often get asked, and really it is not as simple as YES or NO. If you want to become a certified scuba diver by doing the PADI Open Water Diver Course then the answer is yes. In the PADI Open Water Diver Course it is specified that you have to be able to swim 200 metres with any stroke and also have to be able to tread water or float for at least 10 minutes. The reason for this is not for the fact that scuba diving requires you to swim, but rather it is for yours and your groups safety. In the unlikely event that your BCD (Buoyancy Control Device) was to falter then there would be no device to keep you afloat [...]

Are Turtle’s the Coolest Underwater Creatures?

Recently whist scuba diving in Phuket we have had many opportunities to dive with turtles. Each Time I have seen turtles they have the appearance of being the coolest creatures under the water. No matter how many scuba divers are around they never seem to get ruffled and casually put on a show for scuba divers of all levels. Turtles can be a scuba diving instructors dream as the are reliably remain in the same territory, they remain mostly in shallow depths which make them easily accessible the those learning to scuba dive such as the PADI Discover Scuba Divers and PADI Open Water students. The Hawksbill turtle is often found at Phi [...]

Nitrox – What is it and What are the Benefits?

Nitrox – What is it and What are the Benefits? The air that we breathe on the surface and the air from a scuba tank have the same mixture gases (minus some trace elements of other gases). Air is essentially 21% Oxygen and 79% Nitrogen. Nitrox is a term used for the mixture of nitrogen and oxygen. Recreational scuba divers use a blend of Nitrox that is usually a mixture of 21- 40% oxygen and 60-79% nitrogen. A particular mixture of Nitrox is referred to by the percentage of oxygen in the mixture. The most common blends of nitrox mixtures, Nitrox 32 and Nitrox 36 contain 32% and 36% oxygen respectively. Air could be considered [...]

Top 10 Creatures to See Scuba Diving Around Phuket

By far my favorite creatures to see whist scuba diving around Phuket is the Giant Manta Ray. Often compared with the Whale Shark as the most sort after underwater creature to see whilst scuba diving. I consider these majestic creatures as number one because they are more regularly sighted and interact better with scuba divers. Manta Rays often come very close to scuba divers, circling divers and can come within a metre of lucky divers. There is nothing more exhilarating than making eye contact with a massive 6-metre creature. Phuket is blessed with the Giant Manta Rays, the biggest of the two breeds of manta rays Where are the [...]
