My First Dive

The staff at Aussie Divers Phuket talk about their first dive.

Darren Gaspari

The first ever dive I did was on the Great Barrier Reef out of Cairns, Australia around 2004. I did a two dive PADI Discover Scuba Diving with a friend and it was her idea.

The trip that we went on was a spit between snorkelers and scuba divers. Most were snorkelers.

The experience was quite strange for me getting used to breathing underwater. I can recall not feeling too comfortable until the second dive. From what I remember the colors of the coral were vibrant and the was not that far below the surface. It was a nice dive with good visibility.

Strangely enough, I was not hooked on scuba diving then. That can 18 months later when I did my PADI Open Water Course in Phuket.

I cant remember my 1st ever dive but it was probably in Egypt somewhere when I was around 10. My mother and father used to holiday there regularly.

The 1st proper dive I can remember is when I did the OWC in Capernwray Quarry, England. I can remember because it was 4c and my hands were numb after 20 minutes. One of the reasons why I became a PADI Instructor in Phuket.

My first time scuba diving in Koh Tao when I was 12, did it with my sister (10) and mom. Mom saw a whale shark which is something I love reminding my boss.

After such a glorious start to scuba diving, it was an easy choice to continue scuba diving.

I began my diving with an open water course with a very jaded English instructor in Pattaya. I think I was 19 or 20 then. He strapped me with 4kg of lead and as soon as I let out some air, down I went. All the way to the bottom covered in diadema urchins. Had to use the tip of my fins to move them around so I had a little spot of urchin free sand to settle while waiting patiently for everyone else to come down.

I always remember this first day when I am teaching. It inspires me to b the best scuba diving instructor possible.

I began diving with a PADI Discover Scuba Diving Experience at Koh Tao in 2008/2009, really don’t remember much of the dive as I had ended up on Koh Tao after a full moon party at KohPhangan.

First official dive I remember would have to be my PADI Open Water Course at Cook Island on the Gold Coast. Such an abundant amount of fish life including turtles, wobbiegong & leopard sharks, which inspired me towards becoming a PADI Pro.

Martin Ruhoff

First dive, was on my first holiday in Thailand. 1.5 month into a 2 month trip, and money slowly started to run out, I thought one more adventure on this trip, while sitting in an Irish bar in Krabi. On the other side of the road was a dive center, and just went over there. That was it. Sold.

Do I Need to Know How To Swim to Scuba Dive?

This is a question that I often get asked, and really it is not as simple as YES or NO. If you want to become a certified scuba diver by doing the PADI Open Water Diver Course, the answer is yes. In the PADI Open Water Diver Course it is specified that you have to be able to swim 200 metres. This can be with any stroke. You also have to be able to tread water or float for at least 10 minutes. The reason for this is not for the fact that scuba diving requires you to swim. But rather it is for your and your groups safety. In the unlikely event that your BCD (Buoyancy Control Device) was to falter then there would be no device to kee [...]

Becoming a PADI Rescue Diver

“The best moments in our lives are not the passive, receptive, relaxing times… The best moments usually occur if a person’s body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile.” ~ Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi One of the best ways to boost your dive confidence and level of experience is to do the PADI Rescue Course. Have you ever been diving with a group of divers and a PADI Pro, maybe a divemaster or instructor as a guide. Wondered how the guide seems to be so confident and comfortable underwater? The answer may be simpler than you think! The PADI Rescue cours [...]

Scuba Diving Equipment Rent or Buy

You have now fallen in love with scuba diving and you are now looking at getting some of your own equipment. Do you always need to buy or can you rent your scuba diving equipment. There some things to consider when purchasing you own scuba diving equipment and one of the main questions is if you need to purchase it at all. Why buy if I can rent – Why rent if I can buy? To answer this question you will need to take a look at what type of diver you are or will be. First you would need to look at the frequency that you will be diving. Will you be diving with you local dive club or just when you travel on you yearly h [...]
