The PADI Instructor Development Course: Navigating the Challenges

The PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) is a comprehensive and sometimes intense program. With a packed schedule, new information to absorb, and various tasks to master, it can be challenging and, at times, stressful. Each day is filled with activities and learning opportunities, leaving little room for anything else.

To help ease the process, we’re offering additional time with our professional dive team, tailored specifically to your needs. This extra time can be used in various ways—whether for skill practice, theory revision, course assistance, or simply to take the IDC at a more relaxed pace.

Skill Practice

As a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor, your primary responsibility will be teaching the PADI Open Water Course, which includes about 34 confined water skills and an additional four open water skills. Although you were introduced to these skills during your PADI Open Water and Advanced Open Water courses, and tested on 24 of them during your PADI Divemaster course, you are expected to perform at the level of a PADI Divemaster.

PADI assumes you are already proficient in these skills, so no time is allocated during the IDC for practice or re-learning them. Any of the 24 skills you mastered during your PADI Divemaster course could be tested during the PADI Instructor Examinations. The IDC, or worse, the exams, is not the time to discover that you struggle with hovering or have forgotten how to handle a free-flowing regulator.

If it’s been a while since you last performed these skills and you’re unsure about your proficiency, the Aussie Divers Phuket Extended Instructor Development program is here to help. You’ll have the opportunity to assist with the first day of a PADI Open Water Course and practice the confined water (pool) skills repeatedly until you feel confident.

Theory Practice

The PADI Instructor Examinations include five theory exams: Physics (everyone’s favourite), Physiology, Skills and Environment, Recreational Dive Planner, and Equipment.

PADI expects you to already have a solid grasp of this knowledge. Although some practice exams will be available during the course, there isn’t much time dedicated to learning the material from scratch. Physics, in particular, can be a stumbling block for some candidates, making it beneficial to have a strong understanding of your theory before starting the IDC. This way, you can focus more on the course itself and less on catching up on the basics.

Understanding Course Structures

Understanding the structure of PADI courses can also be a challenge during the IDC, especially if it’s been several years—7, 10, or even 20—since you completed your PADI Open Water or Advanced Open Water courses. The way these courses are organized and delivered might not be immediately clear.

Assisting with courses before starting the IDC can be highly beneficial. It will give you practical insight into how courses are structured, which will help you during your training and presentations. Additionally, interacting with students before the IDC can greatly enhance your ability to teach and present effectively during your exams.

Taking a More Relaxed Approach

As mentioned earlier, the PADI Instructor Development Course is quite intensive, with a full schedule and serious, costly exams at the end. Some candidates might choose to take extra time to ensure they pass with confidence.

Alternatively, you might prefer to take the course at a more relaxed pace. Instead of diving into ten consecutive days of study, you could spread the course over a longer period. This approach would allow you to take breaks, relax, and explore the beautiful island of Phuket, making the learning process more enjoyable and less stressful.
