PADI: The way the world learns to dive

PADI began in 1966 by John Cronin and Ralph Erickson after they felt a need to allow everyone to have to opportunity to enjoy scuba diving. They also saw a need to introduce professionalism into the scuba diving.

They now boasts over 170,000 professional scuba diving instructors and divemasters. These instructors and divemasters are employed by over 6600 scuba diving dive centres and resorts.

PADI has offices based in over 170 different countries which makes it possible to experience scuba diving almost anywhere in the world.

Anyone from the age of 10 can learn to scuba dive and if you are medically fit to dive there is no maximum age. Scuba divers have been known to continue into their 80’s.

The PADI system is broken down into a multi level phases.

You can start with an experience such as the Discover Scuba Diving. No experience is needed here. You are shown some basic skills and then you can do some actual open water scuba diving with a highly qualified Instructors. Phuket is good for this as the water is warm, the visibility is good and there is a large and diverse range of marine life. The good thing is about this trial dive is it credits you towards the next course, the Open Water Course (the worlds most popular scuba diving course) which is your first certification and take you to 18 metres. You next course is your Advanced Open Water Course which gives you a 30 metres license.

Then you PADI system allows you to do a whole range of courses, you can specialize in different interests such as Digital Underwater Photography, Deep, Wrecks or you could do a Rescue course which will make you a safer diver, maybe even help save a life one day. All these courses are taught in Phuket to a high and professional level.

Further Courses

After that you can either enter the professional ranks or continue to specialize and receive a Master Scuba Diver rating which is the highest non-professional rating. The professional ratings start at Divemaster and followed by a Scuba Diving Instructor, which clearly has to be one of the best jobs in the world and one of the best places to Go Pro is in Phuket. Phuket has an excellent PADI representation here and all courses are taught to a very high standard. Many of the world’s best instructors and PADI Course Directors choose to work and live in Phuket given Thailand’s relaxed life style, warm weather and excellent diving conditions.

Do I Need to Know How To Swim to Scuba Dive?

This is a question that I often get asked, and really it is not as simple as YES or NO. Here is some explanations and reasons why. If you want to become a certified scuba diver by doing the PADI Open Water Diver Course, the answer is yes. In the PADI Open Water Diver Course it is specified that you have to be able to swim continuously for 200 metres. This can be with any stroke however it does need to be continuous without stopping.
