Importance of Equalising your Ears

Scuba diving is a relatively safe sport, as long as you follow the rules, however one of the most common injury's we see is ear problems after not improper technique or failure to equalise the ears. It is vital that you stop your decent/going down plus let your guide/instructor/buddy know if you have any equalisation issues whilst diving. When we are scuba diving the term “equalising” means to equalise pressure between the inside of your ears and the underwater environment. Human ears have the natural ability to compensate external pressure from the surrounding world and this mostly happens without you even noticing that it happen [...]

Is Scuba Diving Deep Better?

I am often a little miffed when I receive emails asking about depths of dives and the thought of seeing more when deeper. It is one of scuba diving’s greatest myths that when going deeper you will see more creatures. Coral reefs require clear water and sunlight to flourish and most of the best coral is found closer to the surface. The healthier the coral reef is the more marine life will be present. Many fish graze off corals and the coral becomes their major food source. More coral should equal more fish. The closer you are to the surface the more light there is making it easier to see things. How to Select a Pair of Scuba Diving Fins

Scuba diving fins should be in the first three items you should purchase once you start taking your scuba diving seriously. The other two are a good mask and dive computer. A good pair of scuba fins can provide better thrust than most rental fins, make propulsion easier thus reducing effort and providing better air consumption. I recall my first pair of quality fins improving my air consumption by 30%. One of the first things you need to consider before buying a pair of scuba diving fins is where you will be wearing the most. As you will read there will be two types of fins. Open heel and closed heel. If you will be doing any c [...]

With the joy and excitment of this first time experience there is also quiet often some fears and anxieties the come along with the thought of breathing underwater for the first time. You may be getting into Scuba Diving because a friend or family member is already a certified diver, perhaps you saw it in a movie and think it look [...]

Is Phuket, Thailand a Good Place to Learn to Scuba Dive?

Often divers who wish to learn to scuba dive are faced with a decision to learn in their home country or away. Learning to scuba diving in Phuket has its distinct advantages. 1. The Water is Warm Let's face it who likes to be cold? The water temperature in Phuket is generally around 29 degrees Celsius. Not only is more fun to be in but it is easier to stay focused. When you are cold a considerable amount to your body's energy is used to keep you warm. Less energy is available for concentration and focus. Further warm environments also make us happier.
