Phi Phi Island Shark Point Day: Book Here Trip
Phi Phi
The Phi Phi Islands are situated approximately 42 km’s east from the southern bay of Chalong, Phuket. It is a must-do dive for any scuba diver visiting the area. She offer some of the scuba diving in the area and as an added bonus of spending a few hours staring in awe at what some people consider to be the most beautiful tropical islands in the world.
All divers from the beginner to the most seasoned of divers will be taken by these magnificent islands both below and above the water. These stunning islands are dived as a day trip from Phuket and the spectacular limestone formations will provide an exciting day out not only for the scuba divers but snorkelers or non diving counterparts who would like to sit on the boat and relax and take in the magnificent beauty of these islands.
Great Corals
The islands are home to a wide range of coloured corals and an abundance of marine life and (particularly Koh Bida Nok) that provides probably the most diverse range of marine life and coral in the district.
Currently the islands provide the best opportunities to see some of scuba divings and snorkelings favorite creatures including the loveable Leopard Shark, the timid Blacktip Reef Sharks and Turtles. The Blacktip Reef Sharks who have seldom ever posed a danger to humans provide one of the most exhilarating opportunities for snorkelers in the area as these sharks often swim in shallow waters and are clearly visible to snorkelers of all ages.
There are more than a dozen regularly dived sites around the Phi Phi Island with the most popular for day trips out of Phuket being, Koh Bida Nok, Koh Bida Nai and some sites around Phi Phi Ley including Palong Bay South and Palong Bay North, Maya Corner, Whale Shark Wall, Viking Cave and Lo Samah Bay.
Palong Wall is another favorite with given it’s large number of Blacktip Reef sharks, on a good day it is possible to see up to 30 – 40 sharks which provides any scuba diving or snorkeler with a day out that you will remember for a life time.
Shark Point
Named after the Leopard sharks that frequent the site often on the sandy bottoms. The sight is made up of three main pinnacles (believed to be seven in total) running from north to south. The pinnacles are number as they head in a south direction and also get deeper as they go. The first pinnacle is the only pinnacle that is visible from the surface. Commonly only pinnacles one and two are dived, normally starting at pinnacle one, depending on the currents with the depth of pinnacle three (about 15 metres) being an issue towards the end of a dive.
Much like Koh Doc Mai on it’s day it can be stunning however visibility and strong currents can hamper a dive.
Shark Point is blessed with a beautiful selection of the Giant Gorgonian Fan Coral, some as big as 3 metres, a stunning selection and bizzarly shaped barrel sponges and colourful range of soft anemones. This site has a fantastic mix of marine life which delivers both the large 3.5 metres Leopard sharks and small creatures such as Ghost pipe fish and Seahorse.
Abundance of Marine Life
Recently there has been an abundance of Kuhl’s Stingrays and Cuttlefish in between the first and second pinnacle. This site has at times provided some rare and wonderful sea creatures lurking about including Whale Sharks, Spotted Eagle ray and recently even a Spotted Shovelnose ray has tantalized the senses.
This dive site is more suited to experienced divers and can often be intimidating to beginner divers given the strong currents and rough seas. With careful planning it can be dived by novice divers however extra care should be taken.
This is a great scuba diving site and one of the best in the Phuket area.
When learning scuba diving in Phuket with the PADI Open Water course this is usually the dive day we use on the last day of the course.
