King Cruiser
The King Cruiser Wreck, once a Japanese car ferry converted to transport passengers between Phi Phi and Phuket, sank in 1997 after striking Anemone Reef. The wreck lies with its top at about 20 meters and its bottom at approximately 32 meters. It is 85 meters long and 35 meters wide, sitting upright but in very poor condition, making penetration unsafe. The area is known for strong currents and variable visibility, suitable only for experienced divers. Despite these challenges, the wreck teems with marine life, including vast schools of snappers, barracuda, fusiliers, rabbitfish, and goatfish, often more captivating than the wreck itself.
Shark Point
Shark Point, named for the leopard sharks that frequent its sandy bottoms, consists of three main pinnacles running from north to south, getting progressively deeper. The site features beautiful Giant Gorgonian Fan Corals, barrel sponges, and colorful anemones, attracting diverse marine life such as ghost pipefish, seahorses, Kuhl’s stingrays, and cuttlefish. Though strong currents and rough seas make it more suitable for experienced divers, careful planning allows novice divers to enjoy this stunning site.
Koh Doc Mai
Koh Doc Mai, meaning “Flower Island,” is a beautiful limestone island located about an hour and 15 minutes from Chalong Bay. Known for its fantastic wall dive, it offers some of Phuket’s best macro marine life. The site can be affected by strong currents and poor visibility, but on a good day, it is one of the best dives in the area. With two small caverns at 13 and 18 meters, the site is perfect for exploring small nooks and crannies. Divers will find eels, shrimp, and a variety of nudibranchs, making it a macro photographer’s dream. Bamboo sharks and the occasional whale shark add to the excitement of this dive site, best appreciated by more experienced divers.
