Whether you are learning to scuba dive with the PADI Discover Scuba Diving or the PADI Open Water Course or your are already certified and you are looking at doing a day trip or liveaboard adventure there are many amazing marine creatures to see under the water.
Phi Phi probably has the most diverse range of marine life to see whilst scuba diving in the Phuket region. The diving especially around Bida Nok is world class and on any given day you could possible see some cool creatures. Creatures like Hawksbill turtles, Leopard sharks, Black Tip reef sharks, cuttlefish and the big red reef octopus. There are many eels there as well including the giant moray, the fimbrilated moray, white eyed moray and zebra moray.

Often you can see the Khul’s stingrays, banded sea snakes, nudibranchs, seahorses and squid as well. She also has a fantastic range of fish including snappers, parrotfish, barracudas, wrasses, rabbitfish, scorpionfish, box fish, puffers. Also travally, tuna and if you look hard you may even be able to find some pipefish hidden in the coral or rocks.
Phi Phi is suitable for all levels of scuba divers and it is a great place to do PADI courses such as PADI Discover Scuba Diving, PADI Open Water Course and the PADI Advanced Open Water Course.
Advanced Dives
The cluster of Anemone Reef, Shark Point and the King Cruiser Wreck also offers amazing sea life. It is not unusual to find Leopard sharks there along with an amazing selection of fish including three or four species of Anemone fish, plenty of trumpet and cornet fish. Occasionally there has been two rare creatures to these water including the spotted eagle ray and shovel nose ray.
Seahorses can be found at both Shark Point and Anemone Reef however using a guide is the best way to find them. The visibility if often joked about at King Cruiser and the sheer numbers of fish are accused of spoiling the view. There are massive schools Forster’s barracuda and snappers and swimming through the dense schools is an amazing dive.
Snake Eel Scuba Diving Kata Beach Phuket
These dive sites here are not recommended for those learning to dive however these sites are very good for courses. Courses such as the PADI Advanced Open Water Course. Also the PADI specialties such as PADI Digital Underwater Photography, Nitrox or Deep Diver.
Wall Dive
Koh Doc Mai is a macro dive site with lots of different types of shrimp including the Durban Dancer and Banded Boxer Shrimps. Also lobsters and a variety of eels and nudibranchs. Seahorses are commonly found here as well. It is also a great place to find Bamboo sharks lurking in the crevices. There is an enormous amount of fish life here including pufferfish, groupers, wrasse, travally, butterflyfish. If you are very lucky you maybe able to find an anglerfish (frogfish) hiding on the wall.
Another great dive site for the PADI Advanced Open Water Course and specialties such as deep, digital underwater photography and Nitrox.
Racha Noi Bay Turtle Scuba Divers Day Trip Padi Phuket
Racha Yai and Racha Noi are fantastic places to learn to scuba and are perfect dive sites to do a PADI Discover Scuba Diving and /learn-to-dive/open-water-diver/. Here you can find a nice selection of reef fish including parrotfish, wrasses, Moorish idols, bannerfish, butterflyfish and there are some great schools of barracuda around as well. The sergeant major fish and damselfish are everywhere and everyone’s favorite the anemone fish can be easily found as well.
Look in the Sandy Bottoms
In the sandy bottoms you can often find flounder and Khuls stingrays and watch out for those triggerfish. They can get a bit cranky sometimes. Hardly a dive goes past at Racha Yai where you don’t see a giant moray eels somewhere. Turtles are no strangers to these waters either and they always bring a smile to scuba divers. Racha Noi is also the most likely place to see a giant manta ray as well in the region so keep your eyes open.
Overall you will see many wonderful creatures whilst scuba diving in Phuket which makes it a wonderful place for both experienced divers or those learning to scuba dive.
