The Reasons Why We Love Diving in Phuket, Thailand

Phuket is one of Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations, and for scuba divers, it’s easy to see why.

The island combines tropical beaches, warm water, incredible marine life, and year-round diving with a huge range of hotels, restaurants, nightlife, and island activities. Whether you are visiting Thailand for a dedicated dive holiday or simply adding a few dives to your vacation, Phuket offers something for almost every type of diver.

At Aussie Divers Phuket, we spend almost every day underwater around Phuket, and there are plenty of reasons why we genuinely love diving in Phuket.

Racha Noi Phuket – Thailand Scuba Diving Day Trip

Year-Round Diving in Phuket

One of the biggest reasons we love diving in Phuket is the ability to dive almost every day of the year.

Unlike some diving destinations in Southeast Asia that completely shut down during monsoon season, Phuket continues operating year-round.

Water temperatures in Phuket rarely drop below 28°C (82°F), making diving comfortable in every season.

The Similan Islands Marine Park generally operates from October or November through until May. However, Phuket’s local dive sites continue running throughout the year, including during the green season.

Many local dive sites remain protected and accessible because they are relatively close to shore and sheltered by nearby islands.

This means divers can still enjoy:

  • Warm tropical water
  • Comfortable diving conditions
  • Regular boat trips
  • Good visibility
  • Calm beginner-friendly sites

Even during the monsoon season, sites such as the Racha Islands often provide excellent diving conditions.

Incredible Variety of Dive Sites

Another reason we love diving in Phuket is the huge diversity of dive sites available.

You can experience completely different underwater environments within just a few days of diving.

Around Phuket you’ll find:

  • Fringing coral reefs
  • Granite boulder formations
  • Limestone walls
  • Pinnacles
  • Drift dives
  • Wreck dives
  • Swim-throughs and tunnels
  • Macro critter dive sites

Some dive sites are perfect for beginner divers learning buoyancy and confidence. Others provide deeper water, currents, and more advanced conditions for experienced divers.

That variety keeps diving in Phuket interesting no matter how many dives you have logged.

Amazing Marine Life Around Phuket

Of course, one of the biggest reasons divers love Phuket is the marine life.

The Andaman Sea supports an incredible range of tropical reef species, macro critters, and larger pelagic animals.

While every dive is different, common marine life sightings around Phuket include:

Sharks
  • Blacktip Reef Sharks
  • Leopard Sharks
  • Whale Sharks
Rays
  • Eagle Rays
  • Blue-Spotted Stingrays
  • Manta Rays (occasional sightings)
Critters & Macro Life
  • Seahorses
  • Ghost Pipefish
  • Nudibranchs
  • Harlequin Shrimp
  • Ribbon Eels
Larger Fish Species
  • Barracuda
  • Tuna
  • Giant Trevally
  • Snapper schools
Cephalopods
  • Reef Octopus
  • Pharaoh Cuttlefish
Sea Turtles
  • Hawksbill Turtles
  • Green Sea Turtles

One of the best parts of diving Phuket is that almost every dive offers something different.

Why We Love Shark Point

Shark Point in the past has been regarded as one of Thailand’s most famous local dive sites.

Located around two hours from Phuket, this protected marine sanctuary delivers some of the richest marine biodiversity in the region.

Despite the name, Shark Point is not famous because of dangerous sharks. Instead, the site is known for occasional Leopard Shark sightings together with massive amounts of reef life.

The reef itself explodes with colour.

Divers regularly encounter:

  • Soft corals
  • Sea fans
  • Lionfish
  • Moray eels
  • Dense schools of reef fish
  • Hunting trevally and barracuda

The underwater landscape constantly feels alive with movement and activity.

For many divers, Shark Point represents classic Andaman Sea diving at its best.

Anemone Reef – One of Phuket’s Most Colourful Dive Sites

Located close to Shark Point, Anemone Reef offers a completely different underwater experience.

As the name suggests, large sections of the reef are covered in sea anemones swaying with the current.

The site attracts huge schools of fish including:

  • Fusiliers
  • Snapper
  • Butterflyfish
  • Bannerfish
  • Triggerfish

Leopard Sharks also occasionally rest on the sandy seabed nearby.

Meanwhile, larger pelagic fish such as tuna, giant trevally, and barracuda often hunt around the reef edges.

Macro photographers also love this site because hidden within the reef are countless smaller critters waiting to be discovered.

King Cruiser Wreck – Phuket’s Famous Wreck Dive

The King Cruiser Wreck remains one of Phuket’s most iconic and recognisable dive sites.

This former passenger ferry sank in 1997 after colliding with nearby Anemone Reef. Over the years, the wreck has transformed into an artificial reef attracting a huge amount of marine life and schooling fish.

Divers regularly encounter:

  • Yellowtail barracuda
  • Large schools of snapper
  • Lionfish
  • Moray eels
  • Scorpionfish
  • Crustaceans hiding throughout the structure

However, after many years underwater, the wreck itself has significantly deteriorated. Sections of the structure have collapsed, visibility can vary, and currents around the site can at times be strong and unpredictable.

Because of these conditions, the King Cruiser Wreck is now considered a more challenging dive site than it was years ago.

For safety reasons, divers should:

  • Hold an Advanced Open Water certification (or equivalent)
  • Have recent diving experience
  • Feel comfortable in deeper water and varying conditions
  • Have good buoyancy control and situational awareness

While the wreck remains an incredible dive, it is no longer considered a beginner-friendly site and is best enjoyed by confident and experienced certified divers.

The Racha Islands – Clear Water, Easy Diving & Underwater Attractions

The Racha Islands are another major reason why we love diving in Phuket.

Located south of Phuket, Racha Yai and Racha Noi are famous for their crystal-clear water, white sandy bays, and relaxed diving conditions. Visibility here is often some of the best found around Phuket, particularly during the dry season.

The islands offer:

  • Crystal-clear water
  • Sandy bays and coral reefs
  • Excellent visibility
  • Warm tropical conditions
  • Beginner-friendly dive sites
  • Year-round diving opportunities

Because of the calm conditions and easy underwater topography, Racha Yai in particular has become one of Phuket’s best locations for:

  • PADI Open Water courses
  • Discover Scuba Diving programs
  • Refresher dives
  • Underwater photography
  • Relaxed recreational diving

Over the years, Racha Yai has also developed several artificial reef and underwater attraction projects that have become popular with both divers and marine life.

These include training and artificial reef wrecks such as:

  • Harruby Wreck
  • Meditation Wreck
  • Newly developed underwater museum areas

One of the newest attractions is the underwater Hanuman statue, which has quickly become a popular underwater photography location while also contributing to artificial reef growth and marine habitat development.

While Racha Yai is best known for easy diving conditions, nearby Racha Noi offers a more advanced diving environment with deeper water, granite boulders, stronger currents at times, and the possibility of larger pelagic marine life including manta rays and larger shark sightings.

Phuket Is More Than Just Diving

As much as we love being underwater, Phuket also offers an incredible topside lifestyle.

When you’re not diving, you can enjoy:

  • Tropical beaches
  • Thai food markets
  • Beach clubs and bars
  • Sunset viewpoints
  • Island hopping tours
  • Nightlife and entertainment
  • Spas and wellness retreats

Thailand’s famous hospitality also plays a huge role in why divers keep returning.

Phuket combines world-class tourism infrastructure with relaxed island vibes, making it easy to enjoy both diving and holiday life together.
