PADI Course Director
The PADI Course Director rating is the pinnacle of professional achievement in recreational scuba diving. As the highest and most respected professional rating, becoming a Course Director represents reaching the Everest of scuba diving education. Course Directors are elite instructor trainers who hold the ultimate responsibility for shaping the future of diving by leading PADI Instructor Development Courses (IDCs) and other instructor-level training. This role places them among the most influential leaders and role models in the scuba diving industry.
To become a PADI Course Director, candidates must first be PADI Master Instructors with extensive teaching experience and a history of assisting with several IDCs. Additionally, they need to be EFR Instructor Trainers, have at least 250 logged dives, and possess work experience at a PADI Dive Center or Resort. The path to becoming a Course Director begins with earning a spot in the highly competitive Course Director Training Course (CDTC). The selection process involves a thorough evaluation of the applicant’s experience and training goals, ensuring that only the most qualified individuals advance.
Once accepted into the CDTC, candidates begin their training with several online presentations, knowledge reviews, and a Course Director-level exam covering PADI Systems, Standards, and Procedures. The actual CDTC lasts nine days and includes staff presentations on organizing and promoting instructor development. Participants engage in hands-on workshops in class, confined water, and open water, focusing on evaluation training, professional development, and counselling techniques. This rigorous training equips Course Directors with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel as leaders in the diving community.
Achieving the PADI Course Director rating is a testament to a dive professional’s dedication, expertise, and leadership abilities. Course Directors play a crucial role in advancing the diving industry by training the next generation of PADI instructors. Their influence extends beyond the classroom, as they inspire and mentor new leaders who will continue to promote safety, education, and conservation in scuba diving. For those committed to reaching the highest levels of the diving profession, becoming a PADI Course Director is a rewarding and prestigious career milestone.
