What is Involved in the PADI Open Water Course
The PADI Open Water Diver course consists of three main sections:
Theory: The theory for the PADI Open Water course is completed online before the first day of your course in Phuket. This will provide you with an understanding of the basic principles and safety aspects of scuba diving. Completing the theory beforehand saves you 4-6 hours of classroom time, allowing you to focus more on skill development.
Pool Sessions: These sessions are crucial for developing scuba diving skills. Typically, there are five separate pool dives, each focusing on specific skills that students must master before advancing to open water dives. During the pool sessions, students will learn essential skills such as breathing underwater, clearing their masks, and regulating buoyancy.
There are approximately 40 skills that students need to learn, and instructors will ensure that students feel comfortable and confident performing each skill before moving on to the next. The controlled environment of the pool provides an excellent opportunity for students to build their scuba diving skills in a safe and comfortable setting.
Open Water Dives: These dives are a crucial aspect of the PADI Open Water course, allowing students to apply the skills they learned during the pool sessions in a real-world setting. To become certified, students must complete a minimum of four training dives, during which they can explore the underwater world and discover the ocean’s beauty. During these dives, students will practice skills such as navigation, buoyancy control, and safety procedures under the supervision of their instructor. The open water dives provide an excellent opportunity for students to gain practical experience, build confidence, and develop a deeper appreciation for the underwater world.
The Fun Part
The exciting part about this course is… well, almost everything! Learning to dive is incredible. You’ll experience breathing underwater for the first time, which is unforgettable, and gain the knowledge needed to become a PADI certified diver.
During the PADI Open Water diving course in Phuket, you’ll complete at least five pool dives and four to six open water dives at local sites under the supervision of your PADI Instructor. These dive sites include the popular training grounds of Racha Yai and Racha Noi, as well as Phi Phi and Shark Point.
If you enjoy the course in Phuket, you can add on the PADI Advanced Open Water certification with just one extra day of diving. This will allow you to explore deeper dive sites, extending your certification to dive up to 30 meters
The Scuba Gear You Use
In the PADI Open Water Diver course, you’ll learn to use basic scuba gear, including a dive computer and standard accessories. Phuket’s warm climate and waters create an ideal training environment, eliminating the need for thick, cumbersome wetsuits. Most divers use 3mm short wetsuits, though some prefer shorts and a rash guard.
Top-quality rental equipment is provided throughout the course at no extra charge. We primarily use Scubapro, one of the leading brands in scuba diving equipment. If you wish to purchase your own gear, contact Aussie Divers Phuket for all your equipment needs.
Photos
Please note: Under a new regulation introduced by Thailand’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, scuba diving trainees (students) and instructors are prohibited from taking underwater photos or videos during training and certification dives, including the PADI Open Water Course.
As a professional and environmentally responsible PADI 5 Star IDC Centre, Aussie Divers Phuket fully complies with these regulations to help protect Thailand’s fragile coral reefs and marine ecosystems.
If you’d like photos of your experience, we can arrange for a dedicated underwater photographer to be onboard the boat. Note that prebooking is essential. Please speak with our team to arrange this.
