Why booking your Similan Islands Liveaboard Adventure with a local company trip is better

Today more than ever, consumers are faced with many different ways of purchasing or buying the same product. Here in Phuket, Thailand it is the same. You will have the opportunity to support local scuba diving industry or the big players. Scuba Diving is no different, particularly the Similan Island scuba diving liveaboard adventures.

In recent years has seen the introduction of two large online liveaboard booking agents, Liveaboard.com and PADI Travel. Both are legitimate business. Both operations European based and have huge advertising power beyond the reach of local Thai operators.

Prior to that booking were made either directly by the liveaboard operators or through local agents. The local businesses then supported the local economy.

Buying Local

Buying local means more money stays within your community. Every dollar spent generates twice as much income for the local economy. It creates more jobs and helps other local businesses. The increased spending helps local communities improve the conditions of their roads, parks, community areas, schools and hospitals.

Further we will offer local support and local knowledge to help plan you trip. Locals can give assistance with accommodation and where to stay, transport to and from the liveaboard, equipment and what to wear and what equipment will be required, recommendations for food and what to bring with you.

Local operators have intimate knowledge the different vessels, dive sites, water conditions and pending weather, all which make for a better scuba diving experience.

Since the advent of the two big booking agents, local operators have been suffering and as a result it having an effect on local scuba diving employment and that rolls onto other local businesses.

Aussie Divers Phuket is such a company and currently employs 10 local Thai staff and uses up to 20 other local businesses.

Do I Need to Know How To Swim to Scuba Dive?

This is a question that I often get asked, and really it is not as simple as YES or NO. Here is some explanations and reasons why. If you want to become a certified scuba diver by doing the PADI Open Water Diver Course, the answer is yes. In the PADI Open Water Diver Course it is specified that you have to be able to swim continuously for 200 metres. This can be with any stroke however it does need to be continuous without stopping. There is alternate option and that is you do a 300 metre mask, fin and snorkel swim. Some do find this easier to the 200 swim. You also have to be able to tread water or float for at least 10 minut [...]

Common Mistakes Newly Certified Divers Make

As a newly certified diver, everything is new & exciting. The PADI Open Water course does a great job of teaching you the safety aspects of diving and get you comfortable in the water. However, as a new diver, you will most likely make some rookie mistakes. Diving should be a fun and enjoyable experience so try and avoid these common mistakes that newly certified divers make. Slow down! If you are a newly certified diver there is no need to try and keep up with that old salty sea dog on the boat who has 1,000’s of dives. Take your time gearing up and remember to do each step of your pre-dive and buddy checks. Once in the wate [...]

Top 10 Creatures to See Scuba Diving Around Phuket

There are a lot of very cool creatures to see scuba diving around Phuket. Here is our top 10. By far my favorite creatures to see whist scuba diving around Phuket is the Giant Manta Ray. Often compared with the Whale Shark as the most sort after underwater creature to see whilst scuba diving. I consider these majestic creatures as number one because they are more regularly sighted and interact better with scuba divers. Manta Rays often come very close to scuba divers, circling divers and can come within a metre of lucky divers. There is nothing more exhilarating than making eye contact with a massive 6-metre creature. Phuket [...]
